What this tool does

Blank grid paper for Chinese character practice, for teachers, Chinese schools and heritage learners. Six styles: square, tianzige (solid border, dashed cross — the textbook default), mizige (adds diagonals for slanted strokes), jiugong (nine boxes for stroke placement), huigong (an inner box at two thirds, for children who write characters too large or too small) and huitian. Box size runs from 3/8″ to 1″ with presets at the sizes each grade actually uses. The border is a 0.3mm solid line and the guides are 0.15mm dashed, so the grid stays visible under the writing without competing with it. Choose shared edges for the textbook workbook look, or separate boxes with a gutter if you want to cut them apart.

How to use it

   Choose a grid style

   Tianzige is the default. Move to mizige for slanted strokes, and to huigong if characters come out too big or too small.

   Set the box size

   1″ for Pre-K, 3/4″ for kindergarten, 5/8″ for Grade 1. Older students can drop to 1/2″ or 3/8″ and fit more on the page.

   Print at actual size

   Download a 300dpi PNG to drop into a lesson plan, or a vector PDF for the cleanest print. Either way, choose Actual size / 100% in the print dialog.

FAQ

What is tianzige, and how is it different from mizige?

Tianzige is a square with a dashed cross — it divides the box into four quadrants, which is how a teacher describes where a stroke goes. Mizige adds the two diagonals, which helps with slanted strokes like 撇 and 捺.

Why is the cross dashed but the border solid?

The border marks the boundary of the character; the cross is only a coordinate system. A solid cross gets read as part of the character, and a heavy one sticks to the student's strokes.

Why is the inner box of huigong two thirds?

It comes from how much of the outer box the body of a dense character like 国 occupies, roughly 66.7%. Tianzige cannot stop a child filling the box or shrinking into the middle; the inner box is what fixes that.

Can I use this for pinyin?

For pinyin with tone marks, use the four-line ruling on the handwriting paper page. The four-line option there is the format used in pinyin workbooks.

Is anything I type uploaded?

No. The sheet is generated in your browser and header text never leaves your device.
